Our Department is looking to launch its own Facebook page. I’ve been playing around in Illustrator to create some eye-catching artwork. One of the main aims was to design a pattern that could be reused on five different colored background to represent five thematic categories under which future posts will be grouped: teaching, students, events, staff, and research. I built the pattern from vector graphics of iconic landmarks related to several English-speaking cultural spheres, going beyond the usual suspects ‘Statue of Liberty’ or ‘Tower Bridge’. The colours I used were to make up a broad range of vibrant, modern colours. Whenever we post on current events, showcase best-practice assignments from classes, or introduce a member of staff, we use a banner that combines pattern and background colour to indicate the post’s category, and ultimately achieve a coherent look as users scroll down the timeline.
